Central Air Conditioners vs. Ductless Mini-Splits. What’s The Difference?
The main differences between the ductless mini-split system and a central air conditioning system are the price, amount of maintenance, and the overall look of each system. Ductless mini-split units can be more expensive and are not the most attractive, but they require little to no maintenance. On the other hand, central A/C systems are less expensive and virtually invisible, but they do require annual maintenance.
Central Air Conditioners
- Virtually invisible
- Adds value to your home
- Less expensive to install
- Requires regular (annual) maintenance
- Ducts need cleaning every few years
Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners
- Does not require ductwork, making it the more convenient cooling option for older buildings with thick walls.
- More consistent temperature, unlike an A/C unit which turns on and off during the day.
- In the winter, the system works in reverse by absorbing heat from the outside air and moving it indoors to heat your home, too.
- Compact size
- Quieter than central A/C
- More efficient with little to no maintenance
- Easier to install
- Initial installation costs can run high.
6 Signs You May Need A/C Repair
Be sure your A/C system works reliably throughout the hottest days of summer in Westerville. Below are some common indications that it might be time to have your system repaired:
- Poor Airflow
- Loud or Strange Noises
- High Energy/Utility Bills
- Blower Fan is Continuously Running
- Spotty Air Flow (hot and cold spots)
- Foul or Unusual Odors
When to Repair vs. Replace Your Heating System
Figuring out when to repair or replace your air conditioner can be tough. To begin with, replacing an air conditioner can be a pricy endeavor, so we’ll make sure that your old AC unit is on its last leg before doing so. Our technicians will always be honest about the status of your unit, we won’t try to sell you a unit that you don’t need. To be clear, in most circumstances, an air conditioner can be repaired.
The basic rule of thumb here is to replace your unit if the cost of repair is higher than the cost to replace. Just like pouring money into an old car, at some point, it becomes more financially reasonable for you to just replace it with a new one. We’ll always help you make the best decision.

Hoe does a central A/C system work?
The typical central air conditioning system is a split system, with an outdoor air conditioning, or “compressor bearing unit” and an indoor coil, which is usually installed on top of the furnace in the home.
Using electricity, the compressor pumps refrigerant through the system to gather heat and moisture from indoors and remove it from the home.
Heat and moisture are removed from the home when warm air from inside the home is blown over the cooled indoor coil. The heat in the air transfers to the coil, thereby “cooling” the air.
The heat that has transferred to the coil is then “pumped” to the exterior of the home, while the cooled air is pumped back inside, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
Central air conditioning can also be provided through a package unit or a heat pump.
What is A/C refrigerant?
Refrigerant is a compound typically found in either a fluid or a gaseous state. It readily absorbs heat from the environment and can provide refrigeration or air conditioning when combined with other components such as compressors and evaporators.
